How to create team competitions
Everything you need to know about adding a team competition to your edition.
1. What is a team competition
A team competition, or race, is a sporting event in which participants compete as part of a group rather than only as individuals, with results, rankings or participation conditions linked to the team structure.
In a team race:
-
Participants register as members of a team
-
The team may have specific rules (minimum/maximum members, mixed gender requirements, age categories, family format, corporate teams, etc.).
-
The result can be based on:
-
The combined times of team members
-
The position of the fastest runners in the team
-
Participation criteria rather than performance (e.g. charity or company challenges)
-
In short, a team race adds a collective dimension to the event — whether for performance, community, or engagement purposes.
2. How do I create a team competition
2.1 Module you’ll need
First of all, make sure your edition has these modules:
-
Registration workflow manager
-
Team - Manage team captain options (only if you want to have team captains)
-
Team - Allow incomplete team (only if you want to allow incomplete teams to register)
-
Teams - Define public / private teams
2.2 Creating a team competition
In your edition, go to Setup > Competitions > Add competition.
General settings tab
Just like you would for an individual competition:
-
Name your competition
-
Add a report name
-
Add your dates
-
Set your toggles for the various options you want to activate
-
Competition type = Team
-
Set the competition’s capacity (optional)
You’ll see new team options to configure:
-
You can limit the number of characters allowed for the team name
-
Choose what team size type you want:
-
undefined (from X to X)
-
defined (always X amount of people)
-
-
Choose to allow incomplete teams to register or not, if you don’t allow it, all team members will need to register at the same time
-
Choose to display the “Join team” button in the competition ticket
-
If using team captains, you can choose to identify a team member as the captain. If you select “no”, this means that somebody else can be the captain, without them being a part of the team
-
If using team captains, you can choose to send a ‘Team completed’ email to the captain
Advanced settings tab
If you have extra modules installed in your edition, you will see extra options in this tab.
